Story
Anora, a young sex worker from Brooklyn, meets and impulsively marries the son of an oligarch
When news reaches Russia, her fairy tale is threatened when his parents head to New York to annul the marriage. Mikey Madison reflects on the roles that shaped her path to Anora, from Better Things to Once Upon a Time…
in Hollywood to Scream
At the Cannes Film Festival press conference, Mikey Madison said that director Sean Baker would act out different sexual positions with his wife, producer Samantha Quan, to show the actors what he wanted them to do. It’s hard to watch movies where the main characters make stupid, bad decisions.
A sex worker would know IMMEDIATELY that this guy is trouble
In this one, a young stripper falls for a rich Russian boy who is clearly, CLEARLY not who he seems. Yet the entire story hinges on her devotion to this obvious con man.
The film has a lot of great energy, and the performances are never less than fully committed
But the film itself feels flimsy and inconsequential, the gritty realism of the film’s style constantly undermined by the unlikely “cinematic logic” of the plot. What’s more, the big “twist” is telegraphed right at the beginning—then when it arrives, the writer/director does absolutely nothing with it.
