Intended to immerse the viewer in the multi-factorial pain and suffering of Penelope and Odysseus as Odysseus returns to Ithaca, this treatise has been considered a fairly systematic examination of the issues many soldiers face after returning from active service, including PTSD and other mental health issues. , the reintegration into their former lives with family and society and the flashbacks of the memories and pain they experienced and caused and the consequences that resulted.

The Return is powered by a terrific cast that allows the viewer to experience this roller coaster ride where the two key protagonists reach significant heights thanks to the unique and extraordinary perseverance of Penelope and Odysseus in this difficult time of their lives. In fact, the two remain quite separated for most of the build-up, which only makes the catharsis stronger in the more intense, thriller-like later part of an otherwise slower film.
It is a wonderful work and very relevant to experience!
Fiennes brings to this work his unique style of depicting suffering – a great extension of his incredible skills in sustaining pain and anguish in Spider and The End of the Affair. Binoche is the perfect choice for Penelope because the viewer could be somewhat led to feel and hope that the two will reconnect in the same way they were close in The English Patient, and Pasolini uses this to create more tension in this play for those whose reminiscence of the English Patient is striking.
