Story
CIA agent Joe tries to balance his personal and professional life as the spearhead of the CIA’s war on terror. Real military advisors helped make the handling of weapons, house clearances, positioning, team activities, etc. more authentic. Mr. Sheridan knows how to transport us into testosterone-soaked macho worlds, without cliché and seemingly without intention.
No excuses needed
It is what it is. His characters are always down to earth and he is extremely skilled at casting them. But to be great, you have to write good roles for women. The script has to be as good, if not better, than the one for men. Boys are easy.
Women are smarter, more complex
Beth in Yellowstone (exceptional character and performance), the barrel riders, the lonely ranch hand (the fantastic Jen Landon as Teeter) – all great female characters who fit into the world of the story naturally and easily. They are strong and convincing. Not just “the partner of…” or T&A. She upped her game with the excellent Faith Hill character, played devastatingly in “1883”, followed by Dame Mirren in the flop “1923”. Now we have Zoe Saldana doing some of the best work of her career.
Authenticity comes first!
I totally approve of her being the head of the CIA in an open marriage (nice touch). I appreciate De Oliveira as a broken woman with a burning anger who won’t give up, and thank, thank, thank you to the writers/directors/producers for NOT letting her defeat a male partner with 100 pounds of extra muscle. I find her character much more interesting when she’s someone who needs to be knocked unconscious or just be beaten to the ground before she gives up. Are we talking about Jill Wagner now or should I be talking about her hair? What a turnaround!
I’ll buy it
From schmaltzy Hallmark trash to super cool special forces? Honorable mention: Mrs. Lanier as the mean teenage daughter. I’m eagerly awaiting the story arc set for this vague canon as long as they continue to avoid the teen angst cliché. Good actor, could be interesting…
