Story
A sudden attack by Wulf, the cunning and treacherous Lord of Rohan, who seeks revenge for his father’s death, forces Helm Hammerhand, King of Rohan, and his people to make a daring last stand at the ancient citadel of Hornburg. Miranda Otto reprises her role as Éowyn from Sir Peter Jackson’s “The Lord of the Rings” series as the film’s narrator. Following the encounter with the orcs, an animation of Helm’s flowing hair appears behind his ear. The Warner Brothers Animation logo briefly appears in Japanese kanji to pay homage to the film’s anime style. .

Star Wars The Acolyte Cancellation CHAOS! (2024). The difficulty with spin-offs is always that they are based on an original work, which raises the problem of how to make them stand on their own? It generally requires them to be coherent, artistically distinct, and unique. Making an anime based on Peter Jackson’s trilogy seemed like a crazy idea, but it certainly solves this problem well.

The director, Kenji Kamiyama, is best known for his direction of the Blade Runner anime spin-off, as well as the classic sci-fi Ghost in the Shell stand-alone complex series (which is also a spin-off of an original anime film). He also worked on classics like Akira and Princess Mononoke (which is certainly the main reference point for the Rohirrim War), in smaller roles. The animation style is generic for anime (safe for Western audiences), with occasional mixes of 3D graphics and drawn animation. The quality varies greatly from scene to scene, and you can see that there was a limited time frame for certain scenes. The film follows the Jackson storyboard formula with some anime tropes, but I don’t think the potential of the anime style was exploited here.
The plots are very interesting though
If someone decides to make an anime film, it won’t do the audience any good if the end result feels a little too subtle. The score from Howard Shore brings the epic feel of the original PJ trilogy, although otherwise the universe feels a little different, like a higher fantasy setting. The story itself is based on the text of Tolkien’s short appendix, so it’s a very universal classic story, albeit a very predictable one. There’s really nothing else interesting other than the main character. Overall, I liked the English voice acting as well.

The film holds its own with its style and story, but it’s held back by being too safe for a Western audience, as well as some underwhelming production. There are a lot of Tolkien fan monkeys who know the anime, so there’s no point in being too safe with the style. Making the animation bland doesn’t make it more appealing to audiences who wouldn’t like it anyway, and it makes the whole film less memorable and more like a generic action animation. It’s not a bad film, but it’s not very memorable either.
