In a declining Soviet Union, the Petrosyan family finds themselves excluded wherever they go. Their Armenian heritage leaves them vulnerable to discrimination, first in their home country of Azerbaijan, and then in Russia. After finding eternal hope in a church planted by American missionaries, the hostility of daily life drives them to seek refuge in the United States.
